Parures incarnées / Incarnated Ornaments (Hardback)

Les ornements corporels subliment le corps humain, le rendant plus beau, plus impressionnant ou plus désirable. Associées aux vêtements, accessoires ou tatouages, les parures participent d’un système de signes révélant le statut, le rôle et l’appartenance sociale ou ethnique des individus. Polysémiques, elles constituent ainsi des outils précieux pour appréhender identités et mobilités aux âges des Métaux.

Cet ouvrage réunit 28 contributions issues de la Journée thématique 2022 de l’APRAB (« Parures désincarnées. Les ornements corporels de l’âge du Bronze comme traceurs des échanges ») et de la conférence internationale Joseph Déchelette 2023 (« Parures réincarnées. Les ornements corporels pour révéler les identités et les mobilités aux âges des Métaux »), organisées au musée d’Archéologie nationale à Saint-Germain-en- Laye.

Il propose également un état des lieux sur la parure comme objet d’étude. Loin d’être de simples « beaux objets », les éléments du costume font aujourd’hui l’objet d’approches croisées — archéologiques, archéométriques et expérimentales — parfois appuyées sur des technologies de pointe, qui révèlent leur fort potentiel informatif et éclairent des aspects des sociétés anciennes longtemps jugés inaccessibles par la seule culture matérielle.

English abstract

Adornments enhance the human body, making it more beautiful, impressive, or desirable. Together with clothing, accessories, or tattoos, body ornaments form a system of signs that signify individuals’ status, role, and social or ethnic affiliation. Polysemic in nature, they therefore serve as valuable tools for understanding identities and mobility during the Metal Ages.

This volume brings together 28 contributions from the 2022 Study Day of the Association pour la Promotion des Recherches sur l’Âge du Bronze (APRAB), “Disembodied Adornments: Bronze Age Body Ornaments as Tracers of Exchange,” and the international Joseph Déchelette Conference 2023, “Reincarnated Adornments: Using Body Ornaments to Reveal Identities and Mobility during the Metal Ages,” both held at the musée d’Archéologie nationale in Saint-Germain-en-Laye.

It also offers a reflective overview of adornment as a field of research. Far from being mere “beautiful objects,” elements of costume are now examined through combined archaeological, archaeometric, and experimental approaches—sometimes supported by cutting-edge technologies—highlighting their considerable informational potential and shedding light on aspects of ancient societies long considered inaccessible through material culture alone.
