Although Petrarch had never journeyed to the Holy Land, because of his fear of the sea and his aversion to seasickness, this did not prevent him from writing a 'Guide to the Holy Land'. Written in 1358 for his friend Giovanni Mandelli, who had invited Petrarch to join him on his pilgrimage, his Itinerarium falls into the genre of travel literature but it is also a piece of literary self-portrait and spiritual discovery. Here, Cachey presents a facsimile of the text (based on a 14th century manuscript said to be a copy of Petrarch's original), alongside a Latin transcription and an English translation. Also includes an introduction and notes.
