Allograft transplants have been done for more than 150 years. Worldwide, around 2–3 million allografts are performed each year. Although the use of allograft carries a high risk of immune rejection, the mechanisms and grades of allograft rejection are different among transplant organs and types of allograft (cell, tissue, or organ allograft). Therefore, prevention and treatment strategies against allogeneic rejection also differ. In solid organ allograft transplantation, allograft prevention strategies are quite important to prolong allograft survival. This book discusses popular rejection prevention and desensitization strategies. It also addresses tissue allograft transplantation, examining the current status and future aspects of allotransplantation of heart valves, vessels, and islets, as well as vascularized composite grafts. With regards to particulate allografts, the book discusses particulate allografts combined with platelet concentrate as an effective combination for sinus lifts and post-extraction bone grafting and in oral and maxillofacial surgery. We hope that the readers will find this volume a useful resource, as it summarizes recent relevant details and issues that will facilitate the acquisition of emerging new information in allografting.
