Secret SAS Missions in Africa Paperback Add to Basket | £9.74 |
This fascinating book is the first to cover the little known C Squadron of the Special Air Service. Operating in Africa, the Squadron was involved in almost continuous counter communist terrorist operations over the period 1968 to 1980.
In the unstable final stages of British colonial and white rule, the Squadron was never short of action. African nationalist movements, backed by Russia’s and China’s direct and indirect support posed a constant and deadly threat to the existing regimes. Small highly trained detachments of the SAS with highly developed bush warfare skills proved devastatingly effective and achieved results out of all proportion to their size. Often their enemies believed that they were facing rival factions and turned on each other. The inevitable involvement of African wildlife adds an extra dimension of excitement
Written by a seasoned former senior member of C Squadron, Secret SAS Missions in Africa paints a graphic and thrilling account of their covert operations and the colourful characters that undertook them.
The author also shares a lot of personal–so to speak–biographical elements with the readers, which makes his books even more human and lifelike...worth reading for academics, members of the armed and law enforcement forces, and anyone interested in a lesser-known period of SAS activity.
Terrorism & Political Violence
The very nature of Special Forces cloaks their operations in secrecy, so any new account of operations is particularly welcome. – Highly Recommended

This book is written in a very ‘matter of fact’ style; no pretensions to glamour, no false heroics and no vainglorious posturing. It is both fascinating and very readable.
Army Rumour Service (ARRSE)
Once I started I was pretty much hooked and read it at every opportunity. A very good book, covering a period that I suspect not too many are cognisant of.

“SAS Missions in Africa” paints a graphic and thrilling account of the covert operations of Rhodesian special forces including a more modern version of “Cockleshell Heroes” when with the assistance of South Africa a team were dropped from a submarine to destroy a Russian freighter full of heavy military equipment destined for the insurgents.
Robert Bartlett
Graham, I believe, is a great storyteller as well as a first-class soldier, and this book will make you passionate about conflict and stories that would look good in a movie.
Old Barbed Wire Blog
Each action is different from the other, and Graham still manages to weave them together like a fiction book. I highly recommend this book to those unfamiliar with the Rhodesian conflict, which ended in an unfortunate way for matters that were out of military aspect. However the memory of the actions of these few and brave soldiers that as the motto of the SAS says "they dared and won" remains.

It is thus action packed with never a dull moment, leaving you itching to turn the next page, much like a good military TV documentary leaves you balancing on the edge of your seat.

Told with genuine relish and the dialogue of someone who was there on the ground, so it's lively and entertaining.

Mugabe's War Machine Saving or Savaging Zimbabwe? (Hardback)
Mugabe's dictatorship in Zimbabwe has survived only because of the vicious suppression of all internal dissent. At the same time, the dictator fought in external wars, regardless of the domestic costs. This revealing book tracks the rise of Mugabe and decodes his psychology in the context of Zimbabwe's military history. His leadership of a guerrilla army against white rule explains how Mugabe continued to rule Zimbabwe as though he were still running an insurgency. Mugabe used military power – the armed forces, militias, police and the dreaded Central Intelligence Organization – to enforce…
