Strange Worlds: The Vision of Angela Carter celebrates the life and work of the hugely influential writer Angela Carter (1940-1992), 25 years after her death. In bringing together art and literature, Strange Worlds features works by major contemporary artists which reveal the extent to which Angela Carter's ideas have indirectly but profoundly influenced twenty-first-century culture. Co-curator Fiona Robinson provides a fascinating insight into the process of selecting work for the exhibition, and quotations from the contemporary artists provide further evidence of Carter’s far-reaching influence. Historic artwork that influenced Carter is shown alongside illustrations from her books, documents and artefacts relating to her work and life, and discussed by co-curator Marie Mulvey-Roberts. The book also contains reminiscences of those who knew and worked with Carter including close friends Christopher Frayling, Marina Warner, Christine Molan and her publisher, Carmen Callil – the founder of Virago Press. Other contributors include Helen Simpson, Salmon Rushdie, Jack Zipes, Victor Sage, David Punter and Kim Evans, director of the BAFTA award winning BBC documentary, Angela Carter’s Curious Room, filmed shortly before her untimely death.
