Tanks on the Battlefield: T-34 is the first book in a new photographic series presenting original, unpublished photographs of tanks and military equipment taken on the battlefield by active servicemen, usually of the opposing force, complete with captions providing historical context and essential data and information. And where better to start than the T-34? The venerable Soviet workhorse of the Second World War was arguably the most iconic tank ever produced, achieving a battlefield reputation rivalled only by such legends as the Sherman and Tiger. This book lays out in detail the T-34’s production and combat history, alongside photographs taken by German, American and Israeli soldiers, each of whom, in various theatres, have faced the T-34 in battle.

The T-34 needs no introduction, with this iconic Russian tank of WW2 having been covered in countless books before. The advantage of this 200-page hardback book from Pulham is the description of the different factories involved in the manufacture of the tank, which is actually very important because of detail variations in production. In addition, the photo captions often give an explanation of what to look for, which is something other books rarely provide. The bulk of the book consists of pictures of wrecked and abandoned vehicles, with useful comments on each image. A slight criticism is that none of the photos illustrate a vehicle in use by the Soviets, so there is little to see in terms of stowage and crew uniforms. The pictures show damage and the sort of condition in which the Germans were able to inspect the tanks, but not the ‘mint’ appearance of the T-34 in use. Towards the end of the book are some interesting T-34/85 vehicles used in Eastern Europe, Korea, and Israel, with the post WW2 details shown. The only colour photos are on the cover of the book, but the photos throughout the book are as clear as any from the 1940’s and show vital aspects of the vehicle. Overall, this book offers a lot of very useful information – even more than Pulham’s earlier tome – and the result is a valuable addition to a modeller’s library.
