This catalogue presents a list of all coins known to have been issued by the East India Company for use in their Presidencies of Bengal, Bombay and Madras. Each of the main sections covers the coins of one Presidency with chapters on the coins issued from the main mint in the area – Calcutta, Bombay or Madras – as well as chapters on coins issued from local and transitional mints, most of which were not covered in Major Pridmore’s seminal work on the subject.

About Paul Stevens

Dr Paul Stevens began his working career as a research scientist looking for new medicines; later he became a senior manager within a multinational company before taking early retirement in 2008 to concentrate on his numismatic interests. Dr. Stevens started collecting coins as a boy, encouraged by his grandfather, who had formed a good collection of English coins. During the 1970s his interest switched from English to Indian coins, particularly those produced by the British for use in India. Later, this expanded to cover all ‘Indian’ coins, in the widest sense of the term, but mostly focusing on coins issued after the Islamic invasions. Although primarily a collector, Dr. Stevens has spent many hundreds of hours in the British Library exploring the history behind the coins, particularly that found in the archives of the East India Company.
