From the Roman conquest to the passing of legislation protecting the rights of LGBTQ+, the history of London is one of diversity, integration and progress - never standing still and always setting the agenda. Metropolitan London has around 7,000 public houses – an average of 25 pubs per square mile. No other capital city in the world matches this density. It’s not surprising that the London pub is such an institution at home and abroad! Pubs were part and parcel of the expansion of London – that grew to be the world’s largest city by the 1830s. Because pubs are so widespread in the capital, a pub can always be found near a place of historical significance. This book selects some key moments in the history of London, from Roman times to the modern day, and suggests a popular pub nearby to savour the moment - re-living the history with a drink in hand! The Pub Lover’s Guide to London explains the driving forces behind the most significant moments in the history of London - and the best pubs near to where history was made. In all, 52 great pubs to visit - one for each week of the year!

Lots of fun, unique information that you likely wouldn't learn elsewhere.

'Callum's book is divided by themes. We've got conquest, religion, royalty, industry and commerce, government, crime and punishment, destruction, expansion, disease and illness, infrastructure, culture, reform and diversity. Quite a lot, but it's exactly this vast amount of diverse topics that makes this latest pub guide so interesting. It feels more like a history book, which you can bring along on a walk around London, then choose a pub from its pages, take a break and enjoy a pint while reading tales about the city.'

There is no denying, there are few things as entertaining as enjoying a pub with friends or family. Over the course of 50 plus years, I have haunted countless pubs both in London and throughout the UK. I have also read and reviewed numerous “[overs guides” for London. So, it is not going to be an easy task to impress me. Consider me impressed.

I found the text was lively and interesting with just the right mix of history and fancy to make for enjoyable reading even without the pub. I liked the way it told the tale of the area of London where the pub sits and how it fits into the overall narrative of the city. I hate to admit how many pub thresholds I have crossed that made it into the book. And I can think of plenty that could make it into a second volume. I also loved when the book linked something about the pub that has produced an expression that we still use today.

It is not a guide book where the tourist can plan a pub crawl. In many cases, these pubs will be destinations. But it is a good assortment of pubs that will satisfy both local and visitor.

London is my favorite city, and one of the best things about it is the pubs which are found in every part of the city. Anyone who also loves London will want to pick up an excellent guide to these pubs, The Pub Lover’s Guide to London , by Callum Moy. If you’re planning to visit London anytime soon, you’ll want to make sure you have this guide with you.

The book is divided into unique chapters such as government, culture, diversity, religion, reform, etc. and showcases pubs that fit into those categories. The book includes beautiful photographs of every pub as well as photographs of places in London. Each pub featured has information, history, and trivia that is not only interesting, but fun to read.

Pubs generally have great menus – always with fish and chips, sausage and mash, shepherd’s pie – iconic English dishes, and most also have great crumbles and sticky toffee pudding for dessert. These pubs aren’t regular bars like in the US, rather, they are places to take the family to eat, or places to watch big football games. Most have rustic décor, and visitors often feel they are dining in another world.

All told, this is one guide book that travelers need to have with them when visiting. It is an excellent book.

London has around 7,000 pubs, an average of 25 pubs per square mile. No other capital city in the world matches this density. Because of this they can always be found near a place of historical significance. The majority of this book deals with the history of London, then telling about a pub nearby, and giving some fun facts about it as well. There are lots of pictures of the pubs and the surrounding area in there, and the history is fascinating. I am a huge history fan, and I have always wanted to travel to London, so this book was perfect for me, but I don't think it would interest the average pub crawler. This would be best enjoyed by history buffs, or someone planning a trip to London, who was also interested in visiting some of the historical places listed in the book.

The Pub Lover's Guide to London is a fascinating look back into London's history with interesting facts, obscure trivia, and fantastic pub recommendations. As I have visited London several times, it was fun reading about the historical sites and pubs that I've already frequented. But, for me, the highlight of the book was planning all my future explorations for my next trip to London. The author does a fantastic job of explaining the most well-known sites and history and combining them with the lesser-known and even more intriguing stories. The photos are gorgeous and add to the overall book. I will definitely be buying a hard copy of this book! I'd recommend The Pub Lover's Guide to London to anyone who loves travel, history, and food!

This book made me miss London the only big city I could see myself living in. So much history with each of these pubs and of London too. The pictures made this book, showing the beauty and uniqueness of each pub and it's surrounding area. If your going to London or just want to know more about that great city this is a wonderful book for you to explore!

This is a great way to discover pubs in London. I loved all the historical facts and information included. Both about pubs in general and the individual pubs featured.

It was good to learn more about pubs I had already visited and also to pick some pubs I would like to visit in the future.

A fun and informative way to discover new places to go. A fab read. I’m now going to get my husband to read it and pick his favourite to visit soon.

Did you know that the city of London has an average of 25 pubs per square mile, making it the most pub-dense city in the world? This informative guide showcases 52 pubs and describes significant history that occurred near each. I love London and I love pubs — but as a tourist, my time in London is always too short and I can’t keep up with the changing pub scene from afar. “The Pub Lover's Guide to London” is a great mashup of the city’s history and culture, and how those relate to the 7,000 pubs within London's metropolitan area. The book showcases 52 pubs the authors consider worthy of a visit and puts them into both geographical and historical context. If I lived in London, I’d go to one a week but, as it is, I'll use this book to plan a few into my next visit.

I don't drink alcohol, but I love England, I love pubs, I love history, and I love this book! I was so excited to see this book because I am visiting London next month, and I hope I get to see some of the pubs I read about. The book is technically about pubs, but it has so much more. There are clear explanations of several important parts of British history, along with the context of changes over time in the city. I learned about hundreds of years of politics, disease, and other important events. The most hilarious thing was how many pubs claim to be the oldest.

What a great book for both Londoners and tourists. Having travelled to London recently, there were so many pubs to chose from that I would have wanted this book in my pocket for both the concise history of London and to visit pubs connected with various historical events for enjoying a pint. Broken down by 13 various categories such a religion, crime and punishment even conquest, Callum Moy shares a sense of London past with the ability to enjoy a little piece of it today. The information provided about the ales served and food was also helpful. And the photos are great!

I love London and this was a perfect book The Pub Lover's Guide to London by Callum Moy had great history and information about the Pubs. Included were some great photos. My favourite was learning about the Sherlock Holmes Pub.

The Pub Lover's Guide to London by Callum Moy Had me absolutely intrigued as I have spent many a weekend enjoying the more "fluid" aspects of London but mostly around the Camden area (I was so very surprised when The Worlds End and Dingwalls were not featured due to their cultural significance to the music and comedy scene, but maybe next time?) Nevertheless, I dived in and what a joy!

I am going to be following this book as a guide next trip as one thing I have not done is explored some of these locations in detail (I am especially keen to visit St Mary Axe, more for the literary reference than historical to be fair, but the historical is a plus!

The photography is wonderful and I especially liked the composition capturing the grandeur and pagentry of the Trafalgar Tavern with brilliant sunshine and flags fluttering. The images throughout authentically capture the heart and history of the location, a perfect representation of iconic locations

The book is written in an engaging and well-researched way, describing the most poignant and well-known historical events, as well as many very important cultural events, therefore appealing to all parts of soceity (and as such, anyone wishing to visit London for the first or thirtieth time will enjoy this book)

Not remotely touristy, all immersive and a really good book to have on hand for your jaunt to the 'Ton!
