Rating: 5 out of 5 stars The Pub Lover's Guide to London by Callum Moy Had me absolutely intrigued as I have spent many a weekend enjoying the more "fluid" aspects of London but mostly around the Camden area (I was so very surprised when The Worlds End and Dingwalls were not featured due to their cultural significance to the music and comedy scene, but maybe next time?) Nevertheless, I dived in and what a joy! I am going to be following this book as a guide next trip as one thing I have not done is explored some of these locations in detail (I am especially keen to visit St Mary Axe, more for the literary reference than historical to be fair, but the historical is a plus! The photography is wonderful and I especially liked the composition capturing the grandeur and pagentry of the Trafalgar Tavern with brilliant sunshine and flags fluttering. The images throughout authentically capture the heart and history of the location, a perfect representation of iconic locations The book is.. Read more

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars Reading like an Ealing Comedy, which patently these crimes were far from humorous for the burgular's victims. (I should know in the early 70s our newly built house was burgled - along with dozens in our road that night). This meticulously researched story, is one of Flannelfoot, who between the wars was Britain's most prolific burglar. His modus operandi was to target the new estates springing up mostly around London, gaining entry into these modest properties by way of piercing the wooden window surround and lifting the catch. He would wrap his shoes in cloth to deaden any sound (hence his moniker), and make his excape using a stolen bike to cycle to a railway station. To give some indication as to the status this small-time thief had attained, when he appeared in a special Saturday court after decades of police detection, 35 detectives were present from all over London, in addition to a chief constable and the assistant commissioner of the Met. What could.. Read more

The author has done an amazing job of uncovering details otherwise lost in archives and gives this case the attention it, and the victim, deserves. Written in such a way as to blend seamlessly fact and reasonable supposition, this is a very well put together account of an interesting case.
