This dictionary translates over 2,000 words and terms associated with archaeological excavations into eight languages - English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Greek, Turkish and Arabic – making it an essential tool for anyone digging abroad. It contains all necessary terms for the archaeological excavation and survey of sites of any period.

All those who collaborated to compile this dictionary are experienced in linguistics and/or varying time periods of archaeology and historical studies, making it a trustworthy and academic source of detail and information. This dictionary is likely to be an indispensable guide to anyone currently engaged on a dig abroad or planning to undertake one. It should become a standard item on every archaeologist's bookshelf.

Reference Reviews

... This is no conversational phrasebook for trench-side chatter, but is an invaluable reference for the kinds of archaeology-specific vocabulary that even volunteers with some knowledge of their chosen language might not have encountered before. Its contents range from the everyday - 'Iron Age', 'skeleton', 'trowel' - to more technical terms like 'rescue excavation' and 'radiocarbon dating'. Some vocabulary is more surprising, such as the inclusion of 'penguin', but readers will no doubt be glad to know that they will also be able to use that old archaeological staple, 'ritual', wherever they might be digging.
