Illustrated online talk: Introducing The Remarkable Life of Fred Spiksley by Mark Metcalf and Clive Nicholson

Gainsborough’s Fred Spiksley was a remarkable character on and off the football pitch. During the Victorian/Edwardian era he scored goals galore in top flight football, the FA Cup and internationally. Later he, amongst many other feats, acted alongside Charlie Chaplin, escaped from a German prison at the start of WWI and became a world famous international coach with title winning success globally. Spiksley, who suffered from a gambling addiction, was one of the most photographed sportsmen of his generation.

This illustrated talk examines the research for the book, what football was like, Spiksley’s significant achievements and his time in Spain during which he introduced many coaching methods that are common today.
