This richly illustrated tale gives children a step-by-step guide to preparing a sukkah (hut) for the festival of Sukkot. With the help of friends and family, wood is gathered, leaves are foraged, and the roof put in place. Decorations are then made, mouth-watering food is prepared, and everything is set for the sun going down. Sukkot has begun!

By showing children the ways in which they can take part in the festivities – from singing and dancing with friends, to creating posters and paperchains for the sukkah – this book reveals how their happiness and enthusiasm are key this joyful festival. It also shows the pleasure that can be found in working together as part of a community.

With its engaging story and endearing message, Build a Sukkah is a delightful celebration of love, family, and generosity, guaranteed to leave children captivated.

'It is time to build the sukkah. A young girl carries a box of supplies. Her brother joins her to “Tug! Pull! Shift! Grab the wood… now lift!” An adult hammers the nails, while the girl and boy gather greenery for the shach (roof of the sukkah). Soon, mother helps to get it into place, and the decorations are hung. Then it’s “Chop! Stir! Prepare! Yummy food to share!” The table is set, the guests arrive, and the jubilant group is eating and singing under a glowing full moon. The book begins with “One, two, three! Build a sukkah with me!” and ends with “Three, two, one! More Sukkot to come.” Moss’s simple, rhyming text and Magia’s dynamic illustrations that fill the double spreads with activity and energy are the perfect complement to each other. Few books for this age level capture the exuberance of the fall holiday and its many aspects (building and decorating a sukkah, lulav and etrog, festive meals, family gatherings). The book is very highly recommended for all Jewish libraries.’
