I loved the introduction and hearing about her own Scandi Family Traditions. My mother is Swedish, and while our family has been in America since the 1800’s, we still keep up a couple of traditional customs.
I love how she explained Hygge (hoo-gah) to be more of a way of thinking and feeling rather than a decorating trend that has swept across North America in the past few years.
All the crafts and recipes mentioned are explained well. However, I would have loved more photos of the crafting process. I love how she repurposed almost an entire old sweater into different things. Her scavenging the forest near her house is awesome, and works for me because I live in a Canadian forest, however it may not work for readers who dwell in the city.
Overall, a great Crafty Christmas book that I can see myself referring to each holiday season.

What a treasure trove of lovely Christmas ideas! The author, Becci Coombes, who sounds a really interesting character, has certainly packed a lot into this book, so I am certain there will be something for everyone, from decorations, edible gifts, craft ideas to comfort food and family games.

I loved the paper stars and can see me making loads of them now I know how! The walnut pixies are delightful and my house is going to be full of sock gnomes.

What a wonderful idea for a gift to give someone a fudgy brownies jar with all of the ingredients to make a Christmas treat inside. And these would also be useful to keep in the cupboard in case you have forgotten a present last minute.

However, probably one of my favourite ideas is the bauble made from an old jumper. We sadly lost my mother earlier this year and I am making some memory Christmas baubles from her jumper from Becci’s idea for family members to use every year.

With lovely colour photographs throughout, I found this book a sheer delight to get me in the mood for Christmas. Ten stars!

There are many in process/tutorial photos that go along with each craft which makes for a super useful book. I really liked this book! It gives a much better explanation of the idea of Hygge. It also has a lot of fun crafts and recipes that look easy to do and fun to try. The author also does an excellent job of explaining where in Scandinavian culture each item comes from. Craft Your Own Cosy Scandi Christmas is a wonderful craft book for ideas and things to make to decorate your home Scandinavian style for Christmas and gifts to make for loved ones. The book starts with an introduction from the author and explains what hygge means (cosiness, comfort and a sense on contentment and belonging). The crafts in this book are simple to make and accompanied by easy to follow and understand steps. I've screenshot so many crafts from this book to try my hand at and can't wait to give some a go! Some of my favourites are; wonderful wrist warmers, marzipan, mini nisser, walnut pixies, decoupage advent calender, lavender Bath salts and the felt coasters. I'm hoping to make some of these as stocking fillers for my family on the run up to Christmas.

This is a beautifully photographed and appealing collection of food, decorations, gifts and more, for helping readers create the perfect holiday with family and friends. The book is well laid out and the tutorials are appealing and easy to follow. The projects are arranged thematically: decorating, edible gifts, quick & easy crafts, Christmas comfort food, and family fun.

The tutorials are written with an introduction, examples of the finished project, supplies in a bullet list, and step by step instructions. Full size templates are included in the back of the book. Tutorial supplies and recipes have ingredients given in metric measurements. There are many beautiful ideas for upcycling and recycling which look professional and appealing and would be welcome in any crafter's home.

The book stands out especially with the lovely photography. All the projects contain a finished photo, but also many (many) tutorial photos. Photos are clear, in colour, and well staged so that hands and tools aren't in the way of the action.

Lovely and useful book. This would be a nice choice for public library acquisition, maker's groups, and for home crafters.

Her choices are both frugal and green - both of which I really appreciate. I’m writing this review in October so I haven’t completed any of the projects; although, I am definitely making the gnomes and several others (hello - birch wreath!) as soon as I get through Samhain.

This how to book is so cozy and cute, it is the perfect addition to the winter/holiday/Christmas season. I love how the descriptions and the how-tos in this book are very easy to read and easy to understand and how it makes you want to craft and make your own cute additions for your home. I think this book did a great job focusing on Scandinavian style and how to incorporate that into your decor and into your holidays.

Becci Coombes’ Craft Your Own Cosy Scandi Christmas is like a 101 course on creating a hygge Christmas, covering gifts, crafts, decor, food, and games. Coombes, who lives in England, spent holidays at a family farm in Denmark and shares traditional goodies and crafts.

One of the best aspects of this book is that Coombes’ uses found objects in nature or repurposes items in her craft. She uses an old Christmas sweater to make a new pillow, gloves to make nisse, the Danish equivalent of a mischievous gnome. Walnut shells become ornaments. Socks become a larger version of a nisse. Birch twigs become a wreath. The ideas allow you to think outside the box and perhaps come up with your own substitutes. Each craft has its own recipe, with pictures included.

I was very interested in a pattern for a cowl in which the author uses her fingers instead of a crochet hook. I’ve heard of arm knitting but didn’t know a similar thing could be done for crochet. Her instructions are very good and I suspect a person who has never crocheted before could easily make the cowl based on her notes...


Craft Your Own Cosy Scandi Christmas would be an excellent choice for anyone wanting to do something a little bit different this year for the holidays. Put a little hygge in it.

This book is packed full of crafts, recipes and homemade gift ideas. My favorite part about Christmas is the traditions we have as a family. I like how most activities suggested are great ways to spend quality time together and make memories as a family. In my opinion, Christmas has been over commercialized in the US. Learning a new skill or experience is also a meaningful gift.

I was so delighted by a recipe for dough ornaments. I remember cute dough ornaments hanging on my grandparents' Christmas tree and look forward to making some for our tree this year. I also made a bath exfoliant recipe, and it's very hydrating.

I learned so much; the history behind the crafts and cooking recipes that I've been missing over the years.

This is a craft/recipe/family oriented book influenced by the author’s Scandinavian background. The book is full of beautiful photos and easy step-by-step instructions. The author includes family antidotes and background information on many of the recipes and crafts.

Many of the crafts are natural materials which are found in nature. She also relies on recycled materials for many of the craft items. The book is family friendly and would be a wonderful way to incorporate a few new traditions to your repertoire. The Scandinavian treats could be made any time of the year...

This lovely book is full of crafts, recipes, and fun to give your Christmas holidays a Scandinavian twist. These minimalist but stylish decorations and food are giving an environmentally-friendly Martha Stewart, with an emphasis on upcycled materials – old sweaters and gloves – or found items from nature.

You’ll need to have some basic crafting abilities and know your way around a kitchen to tackle many of these projects, but some are accessible for even the most novice of crafters, like the decoupaged candle that’s similar to a craft I learned as a child. Likewise, the clay ornaments are simple enough to make with your little ones but will also be simply elegant hanging on your tree. The title and cover are what appeal to me first. This is what reminds me of my immigrant Norwegian grandmother’s home, this is what I crave during the winter, and it’s what soothes me.. The older I get, the more I want to be as comfortable as possible in my home. Hygge is that which I continue to aspire to.

With wonderful crafts to create, I especially love how the author focuses quite a bit on upcycling. There are also a lot of super yummy sounding recipes to try your hand at, depending on your tastes and I’m absolutely going to be making quite a few things I discovered in this fantastic book - recipes and crafts alike.

Recommended, especially to craft and create with children, pre-school aged and up.

I have been slowly falling in love with Scandian Christmas for the past couple of years, and this book is outstanding. If you have ever had even just the tiniest interest in Scandi holidays this book is a must.

I enjoyed how it was broken down into sections, and the directions for each craft, recipe, etc. were very clear and simple to understand. I already have a list going for what we are going to try this holiday season, including the Candy Cane Game, Overnight Kanelsnegle, the Advent Candle, and making Julehjerter hearts.

This is a comprehensive book with many ideas for Christmas decoration. It includes recipes, home decoration ideas and simple crafts to help make your Christmas celebrations stand out. The recipes are fairly easy to understand and follow, and the yarn crafts are displayed clearly in photographs with clear directions. There is even a section on games that can be played at gatherings, and simple gifts you can make for others. Definitely worth a look if you need inspiration for any aspect of your Christmas gatherings.

This book of recipes and crafts is written in such a warm way that you don’t feel like an outside observer of all of this fun— you feel like an old friend has whisked you away to Christmastime in Denmark!

>From a colorful wooden Nordic Christmas village to grace your windowsill or chocolate salami to give as a gift (or to eat all by yourself!), this will give you all the inspiration you need to add a touch of hygge to your household this Christmas.

The instructions are easy to understand and follow, but written with an extra level of care that is not often seen— the author really takes the time to dive into the technique. And I love that the ingredients/supplies are used across multiple projects, so that nothing goes to waste.

I know this book will keep me occupied all holiday season, and now I am definitely eager to check out other books from Becci Coombes!

We are here for ALL things Christmas, holidays, and celebrations and this one is the perfect Christmas “everything” book from gift ideas, craft projects, recipes, and more. This one, through all of its many facets, works to bring the coziness of a Scandinavian winter season to your home, and range from wild winter birch wreaths, Christmas tree bath scrip, ornament making, and recipes with all the Christmas comfort foods. I think my favorite part of this one is that it includes a lot of traditional Scandinavian Christmas games for the whole family to participate in – this one is a great way to infuse a classic holiday with more fun, more shared memories, more high caloric value treats, and a whole lot of togetherness. Traditional Scandinavian ornaments, food and traditions in one easy to follow book. The ornaments were fresh and really cute! The Most of the supplies will be easy to obtain and gather. I initially snagged this title because I've been in a mood lately and was hoping to get some ideas for the holiday season to cheer me up.

NOT PREPARED FOR THE SHEER AMOUNT OF FESTIVITY BURSTING OUT OF THIS BOOK!! >From decorating ideas to edible gifts- my expectations of what I'd get out of this were FAR exceeded. Everything was so well organized and SO much thought and love was put into this book. Each recipe or craft is wonderfully detailed and includes extra information that may prove helpful- how long things can be made in advance and can be stored, which recipes are great to incorporate with your kids, what you may have around your house in case you don't have a certain item for one of the crafts.

AND...THE GNOMES!! THE GNOMES, THE GNOMES, THE GNOMES!!! (IYKYK)- I AM MAKING ALL THOSE LITTLE DUDES- ugh, they are sheer perfection and they don't require sewing so- GAME ON!!

I will credit (and blame) this book when my home is overrun with full-size and mini gnomes this holiday season (but I do have an excess of socks missing their partners, so I guess I'll use them for this project instead of wearing two different socks ;-)).

There is so much to do in this book, it would make a wonderful edition to anyone's holiday craft section on your bookshelf.

In chapter one, it's devoted to decorating for Christmas. There is a great assortment of projects in this chapter. From making white clay ornaments to upcycled sock nisser, which is another word for gnomes.

The second chapter is filled with recipes for edible gifts. I want to make all of these recipes. All the pictures make them look very yummy. Homemade marzipan, honeycomb, or fudge brownies in a jar. Or if you want to get real fancy, try making some Brunkager, which are brown cookies! YUM.

The third chapter is all about quick and easy crafts. The crafts rely on using some materials already around the house, such as an old sweater. The Christmas tree body scrub intrigues me quite a bit.

In the fourth chapter, another section devoted to Christmas comfort food! What I like about this chapter is the traditional name of these dishes is used. But in parenthesis, a more common name is used. Such as Frikadeller, is meatballs. Or Glogg, which is mulled wine.

The fifth and final chapter is called Family Fun. There are three games for the family to learn and enjoy over the holiday season.

At the end of the book, there is a section that gives you templates when necessary for the activities and crafts.

I highly recommend this charming book!

Scandinavia is the origin of many Yule traditions. Both food and crafts are shared in Craft Your Own Cosy Scandi Christmas by Becci Coombes. These are crafts and dishes you can prepare as a family to begin new Christmas traditions or to give as gifts. I plan on making the woven paper hearts to hang on my tree and the clay ornaments and garland. The gorgeous wreath with paper folded stars and LED lights is also a favorite. I plan to rework it for my front door! I hope to make many of these items with my niece and nephew this year.

This crafty book, influenced heavily by the author’s Scandinavian background,
contains some clever craft projects and some tasty looking recipes.

She gives a bit of background on the term ‘hygge’ and what Christmas traditions are like in Denmark.

Many of the author’s ideas use recycled or natural ‘found’ materials. If you like to craft frugally, this book is for you. Some of her projects are: gnomes or pillows made of used clothing. The included dough recipe for handmade ornaments is useful. The directions for paper stars are useful in making a wreath or mobile for the holidays.

The recipes for Scandinavian treats appear to be pretty classic. They are special for Christmas but would taste good any time of year.

You don’t have to be Scandinavian to enjoy this book!

There are a wide variety of crafts from beginner to advanced, so this book will enjoyed by the whole family. I really like the detail that the author provided for each project. I found the gnomes made using upcycled gloves, and the dough ornaments made from ingredients that that are found in most pantries especially intriguing...


Overall, I think this book is a great resource for anyone who enjoys Christmas crafting and recipes.

Christmas is the most hyggelig of seasons, and in this book Becci shares over fifty ideas to bring a touch of Scandinavian coziness to your home this winter. The chapters cover everything from luxurious edible gifts and homemade presents with a Nordic flavour, to traditional Danish crafts with which to decorate your space.

Projects include a wild winter birch wreath, woven julestjerner star chandelier, five-minute sock gnomes and even a Christmas tree bath scrub! Try your hand at a quick finger-crochet scarf, scented white clay ornaments, or make bangles, cushions and baubles from a pre-loved sweater. Becci’s favourite recipes for the ultimate in Danish festive comfort food cover baking and the all-important Christmas Eve feast. There are also traditional after-dinner games for all the family to enjoy.

When I read this book all I can think of is the Shopaholic series where she invented a Hygge-like word to sell stuff at the estate store ... but this one is a seriously real tradition. I loved reading this and all the ideas were so much fun which is wild as I hate Christmas ... no, I hate family Christmases and the stress ... but this could be fun stuff just to have at home with the two of us. (There are even things I can make for the cats who have ruined the above-mentioned sweater!!!!!)

Easy recipes that don't require a lot of thought were provided and the games look like they could be enjoyable to foist upon the Scots in my family who love to culturally misappropriate things like jumping over a broom at a wedding and saying it is Celt. (I have never seen so much horror in a church happen so fast!!!)

A great book to plan a fun holiday season ... highly recommended!

This book was an absolute delight! The home-made decor how-tos were simple, yet adorable. There was even a section on edible gifts showcasing the most tempting looking treat. Then..I got to the section with holiday recipes and it was all over.

I have already made the Brunede Kartofler (Danish Caramelized Potatoes) and the Risalamande (Danish Almond Rice Pudding). I can’t believe how delicious these creations were! Pure magic! I literally shed a tear while tasting both for the first time. Thoroughly happy! :)

Craft Your Own Cosy Scandi Christmas is a wonderful, warm, Christmas-y, wintery hug. Everything I love about the winter season is wrapped up in this book. I appreciate that the author, Becci Coombes, begins by letting us know she is not a full-on expert in the kitchen. Yet, she introduces us to ideas and recipes and crafts that are perfectly wonderful. And, thus, doable! Whether you are foraging outside or in your own kitchen, much of what you see in the book can be accomplished easily. Becci even gives some simple family game ideas. Perfect for an evening around the fire while you sip Wolf’s Best Ever Hot Chocolate and nibble on Kanelsnegle (Cinnamon Snails).

I loved the step-by-step instructions and the plentiful photos. Becci also incorporates family stories and historical backgrounds into many of the recipes and crafts she gives us. Every bit of this book is family friendly and a great way to incorporate some new winter traditions into any one’s world. I'm looking forward to adding Craft Your Own Cosy Scandi Christmas to both my personal library and my public library.

Oh my goodness, what a book! There is literally something for everyone and I'd say all abilities are covered too. So many activities and a lovely festive intro to the book as well.

I see a lot of crafty things to make/gift so it was a lovely inclusion with the edible items and even a section on 'family fun'. Just brilliant.

I started to make a list to add here of all the things I wanted to try but it was basically most of the book! But in particular, I am looking forward to the clay ornaments, mini nisser, choc salami (amazing!), marzipan chocs (so easy!), fudgy brownie jar, felt ball coasters and playing the candy cane game. Phew, that's not even a quarter of the offerings!

The book would make a brilliant gift...for birthdays, not Christmas, because you'll have plenty of other gifts for Christmas from this book!

The title and cover are what appeal to me first. This is what reminds me of my immigrant Norwegian grandmother’s home, this is what I crave during the winter, and it’s what soothes me.. The older I get, the more I want to be as comfortable as possible in my home. Hygge is that which I continue to aspire to.

With wonderful crafts to create, I especially love how the author focuses quite a bit on upcycling. There are also a lot of super yummy sounding recipes to try your hand at, depending on your tastes and I’m absolutely going to be making quite a few things I discovered in this fantastic book - recipes and crafts alike.

Recommended, especially to craft and create with children, pre-school aged and up.

This is a fantastic book full of Danish/Scandinavian holiday ideas. Perfect for people interested in hygge or in creating their own holiday decor and gifts. There is an intro with background and details on Danish Christmas traditions.
The chapters give step by step instructions with color photos on Decorating for Christmas (includes multiple types of ornaments), Edible Gifts (sweets, drinks), Quick and Easy Crafts, Christmas Comfort Food (recipes for gatherings), and Family Fun (games). I'm looking forward to making many of the decor and craft items and will probably choose some of the edible gifts to do for neighbors.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable and inspiring read.

I find with a lot of craft books I may see a few ideas that I could attempt and many that are beyond my capabilities but I can hand on heart say there are no projects in here that were out of the realms of my skills!

The book contains many different crafts from decorations to cooking and is divided into sections accordingly.

The way the author describes creating the projects, drawing from her own experiences was very helpful and felt like a friend was guiding me and the accompanying photographs are wonderful.

As a parent I felt there were many projects that I could make with children. I was particularly drawn to the walnut shell decorations and the homemade clay ornaments.

The leaning towards a more green outlook to crafting was delightful with many projects using recycled ingredients.

I feel that this book will be one I return to again and again for inspiration and a wonderful warm cosy Christmas feeling.

This is such a lovely Christmas crafting and recipe book with lots of ideas on how to make it extra cosy. I do enjoy trying new things around the festive season and I’ll admit glögg might be something I’ll be giving a go very soon!

The book is nicely laid out and nothing seems to intricate or difficult to make so should appeal to most.

All in all a lovely book that has left me looking forward to the festive season!

I think it’s a nice collection of fun holiday projects for anyone who is interested in Scandinavia to look at. The crafts are relatively easy and the variety of recipes seem delicious. I mostly enjoyed the sprinkled history of each dish or personal story the author wove through the book.

Christmas is one of my favorite times of the year so as soon as I saw this book I wanted to read it! And I'm not disappointed, I absolutely loved the crafts, and the fact that the author tested them with her son means I'm plotting out ones I can do with my little one! I'll admit the edible gifts section made me a little hungry lol but I can't wait to test those out on friends and family either!
It's definitely a book to keep on the shelf!

This is a lovely Scandinavian crafting and recipe book for the holidays. Think Martha Stewart but more frugal, green and friendly. 🙂 The book features all kinds of projects like making a homemade wreath from found branches and bits of other things, making the most decadent hot cocoa, etc. There are chapters for decorating, recipes, gifts to make, etc. There's definitely a focus on repurposing and using found objects, like there are darling little gnomes and such made from knit hats, the fingers of knit gloves and old sweaters. She even shows you how to make darling little reindeer from your twig scraps when you make the birch wreath. I'm not sure that I would go to the same level of effort that she does, but it inspires me to want to. There are also lots of lovely photos throughout, especially for the project instructions. Recommended.

In our house, we love all things Christmas. Sure. it’s August and 28 degrees but it’s never too early to start planning for this year’s Christmas and this book has you covered for Christmas 2022 and beyond. In reviewing this book, I’ve found a whole host of things I want to feature in this year’s Christmas - decorations to make, gifts for our friends and family, new traditions to set. A gorgeous book stuffed full of cosy projects and foodie treats which would make a great addition to any collection of Christmas books.
The projects are very well explained and so infinitely 'doable ' without the need for expensive equipment or complicated techniques.

I am looking forward to making many of the items detailed in this book, especially the advent candle, Every year I struggle to buy and advent candle that goes with my decorations, well not this year as I am all ready to decorate my own.
I would highly recommend this book for those who want to make their own unique decorations especially this year when the cost of living is so high, as the hanging star decorations can be made using bits of paper that can be picked up quite cheaply, but will look so amazing.

There are some fun ideas in this book for celebrating Christmas the Scandinavian way. This book includes information on foods, crafts, gifts, and games. There's small projects throughout the to do things like show you how to make your own wreath, make a scarf, and prepare sweet desserts to share. The measurements and weights for ingredients and materials are in grams and cm. The section on games is especially interesting! I liked learning new Christmas games.
