Illustrations are relevant and of very good quality. There is also a large water resistant folding map covering the area. The GPS world is not forgotten. For those wanting food or accommodation this is also covered, Museums show the relevant opening times. In short this contains all the information for a well organised, informative tour. Anyone taking an elderly veteran to Normandy should regard the book as an essential planning tool.

Major & Mrs Holt´s new guide can be used not only to plan a trip to battlegrounds or museums of special interest, it is a tool for historians, serving officers, history buffs and wargamers. Even if you have been to Normandy a couple of times I bet you will find several new and highly interesting places thanks to this guide. I did. Also, you will probably find the purely historical information in the book very readable, motivating, and sometimes also very moving.

Having covered the Somme and Ypres battlefields, Major and Mrs Holt now turn their attention to the D-Day Normandy Landing Beaches in this definitive guide. Simply superb in every way.

Books Monthly

This publication contains so much information it is difficult to decide where to start. I visited Normandy a couple of years ago and used an earlier version of this guide to plan the route we took. This particular book has so many photographs and information the user may feel overwhelmed by the scale of what is covered, with this said this is after all a guide to what to visit. Each visitor will have their own feelings about the area, but the magnitude of what was attempted, achieved and lost should never be forgotten.

So what is covered in the guidebook? Well everything you would expect. The six timed and measured itineraries include the US Airborne, US Rangers and British Airborne operations, as well as all the landing Beaches: UTAH, OMAHA, GOLD, JUNO, SWORD. Supporting these itineraries are ten battle maps, supplemented by five informative diagrams. Over 500 coloured photographs illustrate 350 pages of Memorials, Museums, Beaches, Batteries, Bunkers and Landing Fields that makes this a must-have guidebook for anyone contemplating a visit to Normandy. It is always in my pack when visiting; I wouldn’t leave home without it. Highly Recommended.

About Tonie Holt

Major and Mrs Holt founded the first organisation to offer battlefield tours to the general public in the late 1970s. Since the 1990s they have been writing their series of guide books, incorporating all that they have learned from their experiences conducting thousands of people around battlefields. This series, designed to serve as companions for travellers, whether sitting at home or physically visiting the battlefields, includes detailed travel directions, military history, fascinating anecdotes and tourist information. The Holts share the writing of their books equally and conduct all their own research, spending many weeks on the ground as they prepare each new book or update previously published titles.
