Sex and Scandal in Georgian England examines the fun, fascinating, and folly-filled lives of leading Georgians to provide exciting and compelling insights into the role played by extra-marital relationships in the Georgian world. Concerned with the timely issues of gender, power, and class privilege, Sex and Scandal in Georgian England provides a fascinating re-telling of the ways in which marriage, sex, and affairs were conducted in the past.

By drawing upon new developments in social and cultural history, this work challenges the notion of Georgian libertinism, demonstrating instead a complex, well-accepted, and strictly enforced social code of behaviour. This is important for too long have historians contrasted the ‘wild’ Georgians with the ‘staid’ Victorians. Neither of these assumptions are true nor borne out in a careful reading of history.

Sex and Scandal in Georgian England challenges some of our modern assumptions about affairs and what is considered normative behaviour while connecting today’s ‘scandal-ridden’ society with the past. In a world where politicians, athletes, and celebrities are under a microscope and are often criticised for their private behaviour, including extra-marital affairs, how were similar issues dealt with in the past? Why is it, just like during the Georgian period, that some people are celebrated for their infidelities while others are shamed and forced into social exile for what appears, on the surface, to be similar behaviour? Ultimately, Sex and Scandal in Georgian England connects the past with current issues allowing us to not only learn about history but to enjoy the process.

"Family historians may gain information on how their adulterous aristocratic or famous ancestors might have conducted their affairs if they know little about Georgian England."

Examining gender, power, and class privilege in Georgian England, this entertaining and informative book uncovers a complex and strictly enforced social code that governed extra-marital affairs, challenging the simplistic notion of Georgian libertinism. It connects historical scandals with contemporary society, prompting a re-evaluation of our own assumptions about normative behavior. Fun and easy to read, the book will appeal to history buffs as well as historical fiction authors.

An excellent book for those interested in the Georgian period. The author is knowledgeable about this time in history and provided fascinating information about the sexual activities of the upper class. I am interested in this era and thoroughly enjoyed reading about how Georgian upper-class men, viewed extra-marital affairs and justified their behaviour. I collect and read books about Georgian Britain and found this one highly readable. I particularly enjoyed the stories about well-known personalities from this time. I highly recommend this book. It is scholarly, but accessible to all readers due to the conversational tone of the writing. Thank you to Net Galley and the publishers for an advanced copy. I will purchase a copy once I spot it in the bookshops.

It’s nice to see a book that reminds us the Victorian had some strange hangups about sex — hangups which have shaped so much of today’s modern society. The Georgians, on the other hand, were more open in their scandals and seductions. While the tone is pleasantly conversational, the focus of this book isn’t so much the scandals themselves but how those scandals shaped society. The court cases, the shifts of public opinion, how extramarital affairs affected households and social standing.

There are also mentions of general Georgian life — fashion, bathing habits, conversations and love letters, dinner parties and all manner of small details. It does, however, gloss over and avoid much mention either of the power disparity between masters and servants, rape, and same sex couples. It does, however, acknowledge the gender bias, how women bore the brunt of the same and punishment while men were able to escape much of the social censure.

This is a fascinating look at the business of mistresses and wives, and I think it’s fascinating.

‘While affairs could be tolerated, marriage to the wrong person rarely was.’

This was an interesting read, it was fascinating to understand more on how the Georgian’s rules on married life was.

It was frustrating at times reading about how things were ok for men to do but not women! 😂

A great read!

‘Georgian men could also profit from their wives or even their daughters engaging in affairs with rich and powerful men.’

Absolutely fascinating stuff! This was a very welcome reminder that the past is not as dry and sterile as we (and by we I mean non-historians and non-enthusiasts) tend to think. DELIGHTFULLY scandalous stuff, I had a really good time reading this and remembering that people have always been people all throughout time.

This is my favorite type of non-fiction. It feels like reading a juicy tabloid while providing insight into the history of Georgian England... I LOVED it and finished the book feeling rather accomplished even though I'd basically spent 3 hours reading about how people in the 18th century got it on.

I recommend it to anyone wanting a quick dive into the past to look at the sexual roles of men and women and the differing rules placed on them dependent on their gender.

I loved this book and very much enjoyed it. It's like a collection of Lady Whistledown's articles except there are no aliases and all the sordid details are laid out for us to digest. My favorite part is Dr. Rankin didn't rehash popular anecdotes that most of us that are interested in texts like this are aware of. I "met" new people, learned new scandals, and I found the summary of courtroom drama very informative and quite interesting. It gave me a good sense of how the privileged few navigated their lives in this respect.

I found this book far more enjoyable than I expected. Since it’s a history book, I thought it might be dry or overwhelming with too much information, but it turned out to be nothing like that. The stories were truly fascinating, and reading them felt almost like diving into a historical romance novel. What makes it even better is that all these characters were real people. It was both captivating and educational at the same time :)

I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a different kind of history book!
