This is a wonderful book and true to its title - a great companion guide to the Godfather movies. I learned new information in this book (even though I have read about these movies from other sources). Well researched and written.

For me, this is the best kind of non fiction book. It’s almost entirely trivia, historical details, backstories and meta and color commentary. It’s the sort of book that annoys my family the most as I bother them with the more interesting bits of trivia all weekend while I read this — and if you pick this up, I do recommend putting the movies on in the background for added flavour (or, you know, watch the movies because they’re really, really good. Well, at least the first and second; I’m sorry, but I’m not a fan of the third) — until they tell me to go away.

I did not go away. But I did hold off for the truly important and, in my opinion, fascinating bites of knowledge.

Drawing from the movie, the book, and the real people and situations that inspired Puzo, this book breaks down the movie scene by scene, plot point by plot point, and does so with humor. The writing style is cheerfully conversational, and actual movie trivia bits are in separate grey boxes, breaking up the chapters about drugs, budgets, and the cast. Such as how Brando had to put up one million dollars in insurance in case he caused the film to go over budget, or how the horse head used in the infamous scene … wasn’t a puppet.

One I found most interesting was the use of oranges. Coppola didn’t add them in as an omen of death — he was unaware of that bit of folklore until after the movie was filmed — but simply because they showed up well on camera. Oh, and that the “Take the cannoli” lines was ad libbed.

If you’re a fan of The Godfather, or interested in how a book is adapted to a movie, or organized crime, or movie making, then you will probably find something to enjoy in this book. Really, it’s just a neat trivia book that made me appreciate The Godfather III more (though it’s still my least favorite), and I highly recommend it.

It is now well over fifty years since the first Godfather film was released in 1972, but still its impact is being felt everywhere. As write this, in October 2025, the news of the death of one of the film's stars, Diane Keaton has just been announced. The memoirs of another major cast member, Al Pacino were published almost exactly a year ago. Watching TV, references to the film came up in two wholly unrelated (though admittedly crime-themed) shows which I happened to watch in the last 24 hours: an episode of the British comedy, Brassic and a decade-old episode of the US sitcom, Brooklyn Nine-Nine. The Godfather Part II also came up unexpectedly in a popular history podcast I listened to about Admiral Nelson. The Corleones really are, it seems, always with us.
All the more need then for this very thorough guide to the three films from Karen M. Spence. In addition to lots of background trivia about the making of the films - Francis Ford Coppola had a hellish time making the original, for example, or the fact that the horse's head used in the famous scene was quite real - there is also lots of interesting history about Sicily, the Italian immigrant experience and the Mafia.

This book makes watching all these movies a lot of fun!

The 'Detail' footnotes are my favorite with all the tiny trivia and fun facts that add up to incredible details. I'm reading this and watching the movies but the companion guide is a fun addition.

I am a huge fan of the godfather, the movies and the books so I was excited to see this companion guide available. I rewatch the movies every year on my birthday and I enjoy other “mafia style” movies as well so I thought I was already pretty well versed in the genre. Companion guide really is the best way to describe this. It’s so incredibly detailed and I loved how the author bridged the gaps between the movie, book and behind the scenes details. I can’t wait to pull out some of the new things I’ve learned in my next rewatch. This is a must read for all godfather fans!

If you're a film buff, you need this book-- I feel like I've studied the making of and analysis of The Godfather extensively, but I still learned new things from this book. I appreciated how it was set up visually, as well- there are pull out "Details" sections that give nuggets of info about the film throughout. I do find that books of this nature can be dense, and those little breaks helped to avoid that.
