Tragedy and triumph often intertwine to create legends, and no figure embodies this more than María Eva Duarte de Perón, known to the world as Evita. From her humble beginnings in rural Argentina to her meteoric rise as First Lady, Eva Perón's life is steeped in myths of ambition, power, and transformation. In just six years, she became a symbol of Argentina's working class, a polarising figure who defied societal norms — and a fashion icon whose image remains influential today.

This captivating exploration of Evita’s life uncovers the vital role of fashion in her rise to power. Eva’s style wasn’t just about appearances — it was a weapon in her political arsenal, a means of challenging Argentina’s elite while solidifying her image as a champion of the descamisados. Through her carefully curated wardrobe, Eva transcended the boundaries of class and gender, reshaping herself from a small-town girl into a symbol of Peronism and national pride.

This book delves into the intersection of politics, society, and fashion, revealing how Eva’s choices in dress and image-making contributed to her lasting myth. Whether adored or reviled, her ability to craft and control her image set a high standard for future First Ladies and continues to spark debate long after her tragic death. To understand Evita’s myth, we must first understand the image she so masterfully created.

I am utterly fascinated by Eva Peron and have loved reading this.

Clearly, really well researched and wonderfully written evocatively.

I learned so much from reading this and will be checking out the author in more detail.

Highly recommend this.

This biography goes beyond the Hollywood myth of Eva Peron's life. It tells you what Hollywood got wrong in their portrayal of her life. We learn the truth about her family of origin. This biography also dispels the myth behind her meteoric rise to power because Hollywood and her dissenters would have you believe she slept her way to the top. We get detailed information about her Rainbow tour of Europe, with her complete itinerary, hair, and wardrobe choices. Though her looks changed, she never forgot where she came from and wanted to help the poor. At the height of Peronism, she was the face and promoter of Juan Peron's regime. After her death, his regime fell, and Juan Peron went into exile. To this day, she is honored and loved by the Argentine people, especially under the regime of Javier Milei, a far-right autocrat. This book brings to life the true story of Evita and not the dramatic, inaccurate Hollywood portrayal of her life. She was a role model to women who wanted to see political office in the misogynistic world of South American politics. I recommend this to fans of Evita who want a deeper, more accurate portrayal of the real Eva Peron.

I first learned about Eva Peron when my mom and I saw the movie Evita when I was a teenager. I loved it so much, and still respond to "So what happens now?" with "Another suitcase in another hall" even when it's completely out of context :)

So I was very intrigued when I saw this new biography of Eva Peron. I liked getting to know more about her childhood, and also the way her life was in reality instead of the sensationalized version that was created for the musical.

The book focuses a lot on Eva's fashion choices, and how that affected her politics and how she was seen by the people. She was the Cinderella who came from a humble background, and dressed the part. I think it gave a very well rounded view of this incredible woman, and showed how her influence is still felt in Argentina and around the world so many decades later.

Found this read to be a largely sympathetic portrayal of Eva Peron. Nonetheless, the author’s smooth writing style made for a digestible read. At times, felt was reading a novel rather than a biography.

Her husband is for the most part in the background. I liked that. It truly was a biography of her and not how her life was a reflection of his. Then there are the parallels the author made as to other famous women like Princess Diana, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Melanie Trump. Each of these women clothing style sent a political message. Eva Peron is part of this select group.

Highly recommend this book!

I must confess that most of my knowledge of Eva Peron comes from the musical Evita. I was therefore interested to learn more about her in Victoria Haddock's new biography, The Life of Eva Peron. While this book did focus a lot on Eva's use of fashion to craft her image, it still offered a compelling overview of other facets of her life. Certainly the book countered some of the myths about her presented in the musical, and overall I thought it was a mostly balanced assessment, perhaps, if anything, leaning a little more towards the positive side. If you are interested in Eva as both an historical figure and an icon, then this biography will be interesting reading for you.
