A most interesting book and I really liked the way the author presented the story. Each chapter lists the date, place and name/s of the condemned. You not only get the story of the hangman himself but of the convicted as well. The author does a notable job of presenting an engrossing tale and his research shows. You will find this one hard to put down. Bonus pictures at the end.

This was a very lovely read. This was a topic that I did not know much about, although I enjoy gardens and mini gardening, I feel like I learned a lot. In this book, Angela Youngman talks about many things related to gardening during this era from gardeners, to personal gardens, public gardens and even shows and tourism. My favorite chapter to read was the third chapter,,“The Rise of Female Gardeners”. We may associate gardening a lot with both genders and flower gardening even more with women but as we can see from this chapter, the women actually started to play a role later on which is during this time period. Without giving much spoilers, there are many interesting instances in this book, some are still related to women, that may surprise the reader which I think made the book very enjoyable. One thing I also enjoyed were the literary and other type of media references. I believe this also helps to form a connection with the general audience as well. Youngman also mentioned many.. "Nicholas Courtney's detailed book brings the story of this truly remarkable man to life, with very extensive quotes from the contemporary sources. It admirably covers the broad range of Beaufort's achievements, from the warlike to the technical."

You know it’s going to be a good book when it starts with a brawl. Helen Taylor and Her Fight for the People by Janet Smith resurfaces the story of an important figure in women’s and social movements in England (and Ireland and Scotland) in the late 19th century. Often remembered (if at all!) as Harriet Taylor Mill’s daughter and John Stuart Mill’s stepdaughter (she was also his collaborator), she was in her own right a prominent and accomplished political figure. The causes she advanced included equal pay for women teachers, free education for all, land reform (she advocated nationalizing all land), Irish home rule, and of course, women’s suffrage. A London school board member, her advocacy for education also included an equitable curriculum for girls and, in effect, day care at schools (which she had seen in other countries), so that instead of being made to stay home to take care of their younger siblings, girls could attend school. Taylor was also the first woman to run for.. Read more
