The Falklands War was a ten-week war between Argentina and the United Kingdom over two British overseas territories in the South Atlantic: the Falkland Islands and South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.
It began on Friday 2 April 1982 when Argentina invaded and occupied the Falkland Islands (and, the following day, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands) in an attempt to establish the sovereignty it had long claimed over them. On 5 April, the British government dispatched a naval task force to engage the Argentine Navy and Air Force before making an amphibious assault on the islands. The conflict lasted 74 days and ended with the Argentine surrender on 14 June 1982, returning the islands to British control. In total, 649 Argentine military personnel, 255 British military personnel, and three Falkland Islanders died during the hostilities.
I have just read [this] book in one sitting; informative, logical and persuasive. A veritable "tour de force" which adds to our knowledge and appreciation of events past and challenges ahead. I was particularly interested in the US perspective, of which I was mainly ignorant and the slightly internecine Falkland TG aviation tangles. I have had no qualms about my distaste and mistrust of the Crabs; the book confirmed all that I knew. I was impressed with the strategic conclusions which not only confirms my view about Whitehall and what needs to be done. I take nothing away from the overt support for the trans-Atlantic alliance, I would just add that, although admittedly a tangential matter for this book, the dependence upon the efforts of European continental powers to make up the whole alliance of northern hemisphere democracies is pivotal. I believe passionately that a European dimension to sea based air already exists and should be further exploited - CDG is a single but highly capable.. Read more

The Falklands War was a strange time for everyone involved. Apart from being totally unexpected for almost all the participants; we were fighting a nation that we had previously regarded as friendly. Within this rather odd background, the tale of the Falkland’s Guns is a curiously fitting series of events that demonstrates a high order of ingenuity and determination on the part of the author and his helpers. In essence, the virtually brand new Skyguard radar linked to the 35mm Oerlikon ant-aircraft gun systems that the Argentinians brought to the Islands were salvaged and transported to the UK to form the basis for 2 British military units, which were ultimately declared to NATO. This book describes how this happened in a highly readable manner. My part in all this was to recover some of the guns whilst stationed on the Islands and later, as the MOD staff officer responsible for Ground Based Air Defence (GBAD) for the RAF, I got to know these weapons well. The first part of the book.. Read more

In The Peace Protesters by Simon Hill we hear about the grass roots protest against nuclear weapons, the A Rocky war and The war waged against Britain taking north Ireland. From those who were murdered for their efforts to those who live to see the difference they made I found all the stories harrowing I won’t say I agreed with all the protesters in this book, but I totally respect believing in something and wanting to do something about it. I love the personal stories of peoples lives and that is why I love pin sword press they have the best non-fiction books Simon Hill is a long time protester himself and I thoroughly enjoyed this book. If you love nonfiction and want to be a peeping Tom in the lives of peaceful protesters you should definitely read this book. They have so many stories and it makes for a very entertaining read.

"The humility and dedication that John shows throughout the book is indicative of the many men and women serving in the armed forces today. It is a great tribute to the rotary branches in the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force and John was integral part of developing them into what they are today."

The Yompers
'Yomping' was revealed by the journalist Charles Laurence in 1982 as the word which the Royal Marines used to describe carrying heavy loads long distances on foot. Given the intense public interest in the dramatic events then unfolding in the South Atlantic, it caught on and is now in common usage. The Yompers is the first account to be written by… Read more...
