Bryn Mawr Classical Review

This useful work will appeal to a wide audience, from military buffs to historically minded tourists (and their guides), to students and scholars generally.

Association of College and Research Libraries

The book is excellent, both for the beginner and old hand at Ancient Military History. For the beginner the information is exactly what they would need to get into the subject, and it also gives the needed information for the lucky traveler to Greece. For us old hats, I believe the best part is the explanation of the topography. So we can visualize exactly why it was necessary for this bit of dirt to be stained with the blood of brave men.

Miniaturas JM

This is a book is simply great. If you ever wanted a general reference for the battlefields of Ancient Greece, this is the one. It is a bonus that it is clearly written and well illustrated with maps, satellite photographs and photographs of items of interest remaining on the battlefield, and where each chapter identifies the primary sources for the battle as well as modern source material. Well recommended. It is also available in digital form which does lighten the physical load a little.

The book is written in an academic but accessible manner. For each study, there are already mentioned extensive bibliographies, without weighing down the text with notes that would make it lose its immediate purpose of guiding the reader to the battlefields. It is a book which serves this purpose very well and which also serves as an easy reference for any historian or enthusiast of war in antiquity. A book that I sincerely recommend.

An excellent book detailing the battlefields of Ancient Greece. It carries a lot of detail but the narrative is not interrupted by it and it is a cohesive history. Particularly useful are the battle sites interpreted through satellite imagery. A very good guide to battles long ago.
