Twice within 25 years Britain was threatened with starvation by the menace of the U-Boat. In this study of submarine warfare, the author explains why Winston Churchill wrote "the only thing that ever frightened me during the war was the U-Boat peril". Until it had been overcome, the Anglo-American entry into Europe in 1944 would have been impossible. John Terraine concentrates on the combatants themselves, both German and Allied, but does not overlook the three main factors in the equation - the political, the military and the technological, as well as the intelligence, the weapons and the devices both sides employed in order to outwit each other. He also focuses on the fighting men on either side, seeing the action from "where it was at".

First published in 1989, reissued most recently in 2009 and readily available online, this book remains a classic and enthralling work… It has extensive notes, appendices, indices and bibliographies. The author argues convincingly, displays compelling research, makes judgements that are hard to fault and has persuasive conclusions. In addition, his storytelling of events and personalities is nothing less than gripping.

The Naval Historical Society of Australia. 2011

A vast all-encompassing work compellingly describing Germany's most effective weapon in two World Wars and the counter measures of the allied forces that eventually defeated them. The author describes the breadth, depth, technology and humanity of these gigantic enterprises or "businesses". Magnificent but total folly.

work boat world

This work shows quite outstandingly that, no matter how good the land operations are in providing leadership, science, materials, information and shore logistics, there must be enough persons of skill, courage and dedication serving at sea to win a sea battle.

Nautical Magazine

Excellent value and packed with information... Having a continuing account from 1916 provides the reader with valuable perspective and creates an indispensable reference to the subject.
