The author of this gritty memoir has lived life to the full and fortunately has the ability to recall his experiences in a graphic and entertaining manner.

As a war correspondent and paramilitary policeman, Moorcraft was a magnet for drama and action. His descriptions of sometimes tragic and often hilarious escapades in war torn countries literally from A (Afghanistan) to Z (Zimbabwe) are self-effacingly entertaining. His light-hearted approach disguises a thoroughly perceptive and analytical mind. The reader will never be bored while accompanying Moorcraft reporting on wars in over thirty combat zones in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Europe. This is his book of hazardous travels to strange, often little-known places meeting even stranger people who were often all too keen to lock him up or try and kill him.

Deadlines on the Frontline is a delightful and invigorating read which offers an intelligent insight into the turbulent world of the late 20th and early 21st centuries

I recommend this book to people interested in how being a war correspondent and a reporter has changed over the recent years, to those who want to read a personal account of what it was like to live in some of the most conflict-ridden areas in the world from the early 1970s until recently, and to people interested in life as a university professor in different countries over the years. The author has written many other books, fiction and non-fiction, and if readers enjoy his writing, there’s plenty more to explore.

Robert Bartlett

Moorcraft covers a variety of information in a highly compelling fashion which captures a reader’s attention from start to finish. His exploits include global travel to primarily war zones in a highly readable text with superb insights into the man himself and his unusual world.
The locales are both exotic and well known and the associated information and stories even covering his thoughts and opinions on the latest US presidential race and Brexit. I found his writing style to be outstanding and would highly recommend his work to those familiar with his work and for first time readers. I also enjoyed the maps and drawings in addition to the bevy of photos.
Great commentary and overview of many places, people and conflicts, it will place you in the front lines as you travel alongside Moorcraft in his 230 pages of adventure. It was hard to place my favorite chapters either from the African or Asian sections and I look forward to reading more of his published works. Excellent value for the asking price, a veritable wealth of knowledge explored and detailed for the reader.

Richard Wade, Military Historian

It's a thoroughly engaging read with an honest clear sighted view of the world without trying to conceal anything as is so often the case with the media or to add his own personal agenda. Buy this book and read it during a boring meeting at work, or behind your PC screen the day will flash past in joy and laughter.

About Prof Paul Moorcraft

Professor Paul Moorcraft has written over 50 books, both fiction and non-fiction. Besides being a senior instructor at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, and then the Joint Services Command and Staff College, he worked for the UK Ministry of Defence in the Balkans and Middle East. A print and broadcast journalist in 30 war zones, the author worked extensively behind ‘enemy’ lines, most notably with Jihadists during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. He has worked with, and reported on, special forces in countries as far apart as Nepal and South Africa, as well as serving as an officer in Zimbabwe’s forces. His command of German, and later Hebrew, supported the initial research for this book. His fluency in Welsh has been useful too as some of the Jewish commandos lived and trained in North Wales and indeed sometimes successfully claimed to be Welsh when captured. The author has also worked in desert war zones, most recently during six trips in Darfur, Sudan, where he spent time with rebel groups and separately with Sudanese government forces
A fellow of the Royal Historical Society, he returned to his Welsh homeland in 2021.
