Like the other books in the Holts' acclaimed Battlefield Guide Series (see inside front cover for details) this is much more than just a guidebook. It charts in fascinating detail what happened at each recommended stop and brings alive, with cameos and personal recollections, the dramatic events of September 1944.

It is the very first detailed guide to chart the entire MARKET-GARDEN Corridor - from Leopoldsburg in Belgium and over the important bridges at the Scheldt-Maas Canal, the Wilhelmina Canal, the Zuid Willemsvaart Canal, the Maas and the Waal to the Bridge at Arnhem over the Lower Rhine - the 'Bridge Too Far'.

There are stories of gallantry, despair, humour, fear and dogged persistence

- here was a hidden execution ground and cemetery in Belgium
- here Pfc Joe Mann threw himself onto a grenade to save his buddies
- here the 504th PIR made the daring crossing over the Waal
- here was Diogenes, the Germans' menacing secret bunker
- here twin brothers of the British Airborne were killed together
- here Colonel Johnny Frost clung on for 4 desperate days

Major and Mrs Holt have long been setting the benchmark for superb battlefield guides, and this third edition, ambitiously covering the entire Operation Market Garden area, certainly adds to that reputation. Accompanied by a large map, it begins with a historical overview of the ill-fated campaign and is thereafter divided into five timed itineraries covering all of the principal sectors; beginning with the initial advance of XXX Corps, then the 101st Airborne Division at Eindhoven, the 82nd Airborne Division in the Groesbeek and Nijmegen areas, and finally the 1st Airborne Division and Polish Brigade around Arnhem. In all, no less than 325 places of interest are described, including museums, cemeteries and monuments, with a great many colour photographs scattered throughout, as well as directions and a concise but thorough and personal narrative accompanying each site. This book is a remarkable achievement, and it is difficult to imagine touring the battlefield in the company of anything else.

This is an updated third edition of this outstanding guide to the Market Garden battlefields. The authors are famous for their battlefield guides and this volume is written to their high standards. If you are going to visit the Market Garden area then this guidebook is a must have.

There has been a multitude of books on Market Garden but this volume is unique in that it is a guide to all the battlefields. It starts with an update to the main section covering things that have changed since the second edition. This update includes new monuments / memorials, new or changed museums and new / changed roads. This latter point is of particular note because there have been some changes in road access to the battlefields during the last few years and this affects one of the recommended itineraries.

It is not possible to over-emphasize the quality and usefulness of this guidebook. It is not just another guidebook – it is the guidebook for Operation Market Garden. If you are going to these battlefields or just wish to know more about them then this is the book to buy! There is no need to consider any others.

Military Archive Research

Here is a classic for battlefield tourists back for a third bite at the cherry. It is updated for the world of GPS and includes info on the monuments and other things which have been added or changed on the battlefield since the first edition came out over a decade ago. All the usual ingredients of itineraries and snippets of detail in dedicated panels are in place. It looks and feels the same; reliable, tough and easy to follow. The photos entice you out on to the battlefield trail.

This new edition has a forty page update that includes new and changed roads, new memorials and museums and other tourist information which together with the older material does make this publication indispensable for the battlefield tourist.

The Bulletin

Major & Mrs Holt are well known for kick-starting the revival in battlefield tours in the late 1970s when they ran their very successful Holts Battlefields company. While they have not been associated with that company for some time, they have put their many years of experience into producing very popular full-colour battlefield guidebooks to both WW1 and WW2 battlefields, often along with an accompanying full colour map.
This new 2013 edition of their Operation Market Garden guide comes with such a map and while the main body of the text is largely unchanged since the original 2001 version, there is a whole section of updated information at the start of the book, again with colour images of many of these new sites or memorials.
The main body of the book starts with a good, concise historical introduction to Operation Market Garden and then moves on to five battlefield itineraries which can be used to follow a specific route with the aid of the map, or are easily dipped into if you are doing your own tour. The tours cover the whole of Market Garden’s area of operation from the Belgian-Dutch border through the advance of XXX Corps and on to the area around Arnhem.

Another invaluable guide from Major and Mrs Holt. It charts in fascinating detail what happened at each recommended stop, and brings alive, with cameos and personal recollections, the dramatic events of September 1944.

GPS locations are given in this section, but not in the original text, which is a bit of a shame. Personally I would have preferred this information in the main book, but of course that would have meant a complete re-write.
I cannot recommend this book too highly for anyone thinking of making a journey following the ground troops from Joes Bridge to Nijmegen or the Airborne forces at Arnhem, remembering one of the greatest – and fascinating – British gambles of the Second World War.

About Tonie Holt

Major and Mrs Holt founded the first organisation to offer battlefield tours to the general public in the late 1970s. Since the 1990s they have been writing their series of guide books, incorporating all that they have learned from their experiences conducting thousands of people around battlefields. This series, designed to serve as companions for travellers, whether sitting at home or physically visiting the battlefields, includes detailed travel directions, military history, fascinating anecdotes and tourist information. The Holts share the writing of their books equally and conduct all their own research, spending many weeks on the ground as they prepare each new book or update previously published titles.
