Panzer III: German Army Light Tank, Operation Barbarossa, 1941. TankCraft 27. The Pzkpfw III tank was the mainstay of the Panzer divisions during the Blitzkrieg era, which could fairly be said to have ended with the Germans' failure to take Moscow in the winter of 1941. Although less heavily armoured than many of its opponents and somewhat outgunned by the latest Soviet types, the Pzkpfw III was at the forefront of the advances made over almost impossible distances during the summer and autumn and provided the core of the armoured reserve that fought the defensive battles of the winter months. In Dennis Oliver's latest volume in the TankCraft series he uses archive photos and extensively researched colour illustrations to examine the Pzkpfw III and the units that operated this deservedly famous armoured vehicle along a 1,000-mile front during the battles of Operation Barbarossa, the German invasion of the Soviet Union. A key section of his book displays available model kits and aftermarket products, complemented by a gallery of beautifully constructed and painted models in various scales. Technical details as well as modifications introduced during production and in the field are also examined, providing everything the modeller needs to recreate an accurate representation of these historic tanks.

This welcome addition to the Tank Craft series of books was first published in 2019. It follows the familiar format of an introduction to set the development of the tank in context, an operational history including unit histories, orders of battle, followed by lavish and detailed artwork with technical details of the different variants as they evolved.

The book is aimed squarely at modellers and wargamers, who will find much to interest them in its 64 pages. Of particular interest to wargamers is a table setting out the strengths of the panzer divisions involved in Barbarossa, at the start of the campaign. The contemporary photographs are well-chosen and support the text. An interested reader will have no trouble identifying and understanding the development of the Pz III having read through pages 59 to 63.

Author Dennis Oliver is a well-known and respected authority on German AFVs of World War II and has written many of the Tank Craft series of books. His well-researched text and captions are up to his usual high standard. This book will prove invaluable for model makers and military historians interested in this often overlooked but important AFV. This is another great addition to the Tank Craft series and is highly recommended to all.

A special modeler's section covers plastic models, mostly 1/35 but including 1/48, 1/72, and other scales in exquisite detail. The 95 color photos show completed models, box covers, and aftermarket items.

AMPS Indianapolis

The TankCraft books are always welcome additions to my resource collection as inspiration for new projects and paint schemes or to pick out details I might have missed in a build...The photos are interesting and not common ones you see in the typical history books. Overall, a fantastic read.

This offering from Pen and Sword as part of their Tank Craft book series and this time looking at the Panzer III is another great addition to the series. Looking over this title it is hard to pick fault.

Army Rumour Service (ARRSE)

Another excellent addition to the TankCraft series of books, aimed primarily at modellers, but applicable to an even wider readership. The Panzer III is described as it was deployed for Operation Barbarossa with the usual high quality images for which this series is renowned – Very Highly Recommended

Scale Modelling Now

This is one of those superb books from Pen and Sword that are intended primarily for model makers but also provide brilliantly told facts about the history of these amazing machines.

The quality of information and production are excellent. Anyone interested in tanks will find this book worthwhile; as for modelers embarking on a panzer III on the eastern front project, a copy of this should be on their craft desk.

Beating Tsundoku

Another fine book in the TankCraft series from author Dennis Oliver. I also rather like it for concentrating on a period of German armour where the colour schemes are still all Panzer Grey rather than the more varied multi-colour camouflage seen on German armour from 1943. I am sure armour historians and modellers will both enjoy this one.

A Question of Scale

It is another issue of Tank Craft (number 27) which is dedicated in particular to a fairly small tank in terms of size, perhaps devoid of the charm of Tigers or Panthers, but which refers to a fairly limited historical period , and for me is a winner. I am sure that you too, whether you are newbies or professional modelers, will consider trying to build a Panzer III and maybe a diorama inspired by the beautiful photos, coloration schemes or the works of the modelers featured in this fantastic volume.
