The 'ShipCraft' series provides in-depth information about building and modifying model kits of famous warship types. Lavishly illustrated, each book takes the modeller through a brief history of the subject class, highlighting differences between sister-ships and changes in their appearance over their careers. This includes paint schemes and camouflage, featuring colour profiles and highly-detailed line drawings and scale plans. The modelling section reviews the strengths and weaknesses of available kits, lists commercial accessory sets for super-detailing of the ships, and provides hints on modifying and improving the basic kit. This is followed by an extensive photographic gallery of selected high-quality models in a variety of scales, and the book concludes with a section on research references – books, monographs, large-scale plans and relevant websites.

The Iowa class were the largest, fastest and most modern US battleships of the war, and the formal surrender of Japan was signed on the deck of one of them, USS Missouri. Modernised post-war, they served in Korea, Vietnam and as late as the first Gulf War. They are among the most popular subjects of all for model kits.

An excellent addition to a very interesting series, commended to modellers, wargamers, or anyone with an interest in the subject wanting brief information on different warships. Soundly researched, well-written and presenting good information, it is illustrated by superb plans and photographs and represents real value for money.

Military Modelling Magazine

A wealth of detailed photos and line drawings. Photos of outstanding models and superb colour illustrations '

Ships Monthly

In this book the author takes us through the design history and careers of these ships, together with details of variations and modifications. The section on Model Maker’s showcase that features a gallery of colour photographs of outstanding models by some of the world’s leading model makers. With this level of information, this is a superb reference book for any model maker setting out to build one of these famous ships.

Model Boats, January 2013

This outstanding book is essentially in two sections – first the history of the class is given and then a review of modelling products that cover this class. The first portion covers the design history, careers of the constituent ships of the class, full details on this class modifications / variations, a gallery of period photographs and details of further references.

Although the volume is not large at 64 pages this ‘history’ section has many excellent features. The text is superb and it serves beyond the ‘introductory’ level. In itself this section is an excellent reference work. There are many details and this portion is exceptionally interesting.

In summary, this book is well suited to both those seeking information on this class of capital ship and those seeking to produce replica models. Both markets are catered for and the author’s work is conducted to a very high standard. I am confident that this book will become an ideal reference volume on the Iowa class for both of these ‘markets’.

The target audience here would be modellers who want to start with a kit and then add extra details or increase the accuracy of the kit. The book is also of general interest as a history of the Iowa class, with the modelling sections adding extra value.
