The Pzkpfw Ill was the most effective tank available to the German army in North Africa during the battles of 1941. It outnumbered all the other types in service with the Afrikakorps at that time and when compared to the Pzkpfw I and Pzkpfw II designs it was a potent, modern weapons system. Although less heavily armoured than its British opponents it was sturdy and reliable and its main armament was the equal of any enemy anti-tank gun it was called upon to face. This volume of the TankCraft series, the first of two parts, examines the story of the tank's North African service beginning with the arrival of Panzer-Regiment 5 in Tripoli and ending with the advance to El Alamein in late 1942. Dennis Oliver uses archive photos and extensively researched colour illustrations to examine the Pzkpfw Ill and the Panzer units that took part in the early battles in North Africa. A key section of his book displays available model kits and aftermarket products, complemented by a gallery of beautifully constructed and painted models in various scales. Technical details as well as modifications introduced during production and in the field are also examined, providing everything the modeller needs to recreate an accurate representation of these historic tanks.

I still think anyone interested in the Panzer III is likely to find some information that they were not completely aware of, the black and white pictures that are used in the book do tell stories themselves.

Dennis Oliver brings his usual meticulous care to this study of the Panzer IIIs sent to North Africa in what has become a familiar format. The wider background to the campaign is set out, with a summary of the organisational changes that the Afrikakorps went through as it expanded to meet its role, A timeline summary of major events is included.

The Author then focuses on the two Panzer regiments that served in the desert together with ten pages of illustrated colour side profiles and twenty-two pages of model kits, generously studded with colour photographs. Details of available suppliers and after market kits are included.
A chapter follows giving comprehensive details of the various production versions and refurbishments, including in the field modifications, and unit markings, illustrated by black and white photographs... the book is a welcome addition to the Tank Craft series and is highly recommended.
In this second volume of a planned trilogy on the Panzer III, the author shares his enthusiasm and extensive research by discussing the Ausfürhrungs G, H and J, the main marks of the Panzer III used North Africa. We have an excellent reference for both enthusiasts of armour and scale modelling with extensive coverage of the types and their deployment... I'm keen to see the third book when it's published.

As ever, well illustrated throughout, with plenty of good clear archive images, coupled with some beautifully built models on display and accompanied by the appropriate history of the Panzer III in North Africa during 1941/2, this is once again a nicely balanced book mixing history and models that will be of interest to many modellers.
