Arranged in five sections, one for each year of the War, this superbly illustrated book covers the fluid fighting that took place on the Russian Front from August 1914. The author describes how each year saw dramatic developments, notably actions in Poland, Tannenberg, the Carpathian passes in 1914, the 1915 operations in Galicia and the Baltic and the 1916 Brinsilov offensive. 1917 saw the collapse of the German army leading to the 1918 Treaty of Brest-Litovsk and continued fighting along the Baltic and in the Ukraine. The informative text is complemented by over 200 mainly previously unpublished photographs. The Central Powers on the Russian Front 1914 – 1918 with its emphasis on the German Army's actions against Russia but covering operations on many fronts makes it especially valuable to those who seek greater insight into the wider conduct of The Great War away from the Western Front.

This is an interesting selection of photographs that show us a very different aspect of the First World War, from a front where movement remained possible for most of the war.

History of War

This is an excellent book brimming with superb photographs accompanied by very useful captions. As ever, there is something for uniform buffs and collectors, living historians and old photo lovers along with anyone nostalgic for the days of empire in central and Eastern Europe. I am not too sure how many of them there might be! Once again this series has done itself justice with a thoroughly good instalment. All in all, this is a top class product.

War History Online

Pen & Sword have a justifiably well deserved reputation for publishing high quality, well-written books on military history, and ‘The Central Powers on The Russian Front1914-1918’ is no exception. The book is part of Pen & Sword’s highlighting of the centenary of the Great War. Now, while much has been written about the Great War, the role the Russian Front played in it, a massive role that is often sadly neglected, so great credit is due to Pen & Sword for remedying this. Not only did the Great War change the world we live in today, but it created the situation for revolution in Russia, another event which has very much shaped the world today.

This book is part of Pen & Sword’s Images of War series, which is a fine idea in that so many books of military history, no matter how well written, have comparatively few illustrations. In the case of this book, there are over 200 photographs, many never published before. The effect of this is to give the book a massive visual impact. I have to say too, that David Bilton’s text accompanying the photographs is well-researched and well written
