United States Marine Corps in… Paperback Add to Basket £15.99

With the American-supported South Vietnamese government verging on collapse in early 1965, American President Lyndon Johnson decided to commit American conventional ground forces in the form of a United States Marine Corps (USMC) brigade of approximately 3,000 men on March 8, 1965. So began a massive and costly 10-year commitment.

At its height in 1968, the USMC had 86,000 men in South Vietnam. Almost 500,000 Marines would eventually rotate in out of South Vietnam during their typical one-year tours of duty. In the end, the fighting during such well-known battles at Con Tien, Chu Lai, Hue, Khe Sanh and Dong Ha and thousands of now forgotten smaller-scale engagements would cost the USMC 13,070 killed in action and 88,630 wounded, more casualties than they suffered during the Second World War.

In this book, well-known military historian Michael Green using hundreds of dramatic images tells the dramatic and gallant story of the Marines’ contribution to an unwinnable war; the battles, their equipment, from rifles to helicopters and jets, and the strategy adopted by the Corps.

First-class documentation.

Miniaturas JM

Mr Green knows his stuff and gives us a decent and concise text alongside the excellent captions for the imagery. There are plenty of shots of people, weapons and events to accompany maps and other useful information.

Once again, this is one of those solidly efficient books that seems to be effortless to produce which, in fact, takes a great deal of work. It can provide a fair intro into the conflict for newbies and there is plenty of reference potential for living history buffs, collectors and model makers. Recommended.

War History Online

A one-volume history is tough enough to fit in 205 pages, much less in a book with 220 black and white photos, 16 color photos, eight black and white maps, and one black and white TO&E diagram. Yet this overview of US Marine Corps equipment used in various operations does a marvelous job. A great selection of photos show uniforms, kit, vehicles, artillery, helicopters, aircraft, mortars, and even some VC and NVA weapons and equipment on the front lines and in rear areas.

One of the most interesting photos, or at least to me, shows a VC commander pointing out details on a wargame-like terrain model displaying a triangular outpost or fire base (p186). Enjoyed it.

The Images of War series is one of the most successful products in military history publishing with this addition to the series following that very popular format to the highest standards. By combining low cost with outstanding images and excellent concise text this photo-review of the USMC in Vietnam will be highly successful. – Very Highly Recommended.

Beating Tsundoku

This title as part of the Images at War series is another great title in the line up as it covers a war many of us will remember from our childhood and others from adult hood or even fighting in this war. This book covers the United States Marine Corps really well during the early years, but not the later period of conflict; with that said war does not vary much beyond the brutality that long periods of conflict results in. All told a great visual treat for the modeller with a well written accompaniment.

A very good book which shows the war, warts and all, that the Marines fought in Vietnam. A good addition to the Images of War series and a good book to have if you have an interest in the Vietnam War.

Army Rumour Service (ARRSE)

The book, which tells of an extremely documented war, with numerous iconic photos, does it through mostly unpublished or rare photos, even if for Hue and Khe Sanh this is very difficult. The result is that of telling the war effort of the Marines in a book that will not be missing on the shelves of people interested in this war, unpopular and tragic, which was the Vietnam War.

On The Old Barbed Wire

Aa ever in the Images of War series, this book delivers striking images of the US Marine Corps in Vietnam and invokes the difficulties that the USMC (and indeed the US Army) endured. The heat, humidity and fear seep from the well chosen images.
