Most miniature wargames take the form of simulating a single battle with the opponents either winning or losing and that's that until the next game. Such games can be a fun test of tactical skill but it can be even more rewarding if they form part of a wider campaign. In a campaign, the players commanding the forces have to make the decisions at the strategic level that determine the context of any battles that occur. The outcome of these battles will, in turn, have strategic consequences for the ongoing campaign'.

Although campaigns can be very rewarding, many wargamers are deterred by the need to produce maps and devise mechanisms for strategic movement, Intelligence, logistics, recruiting reinforcements, keeping track of casualties etc. Henry Hyde's excellent book greatly eases this task with masses of sound advice, concrete suggestions and even a full set of campaign rules useful for any period. Whatever historical or fantasy setting you prefer, Henry shows that even simple campaigns can add extra fun to your gaming.

I've always been fascinated by war games, but never inclined to actually take part. Henry Hyde's book is terrific.

Books Monthly

I suspect most wargamers will use this book as a reference resource rather than reading it from cover to cover. Nonetheless, I loved this book, which I will keep within easy reach. It is a mixture of inspiration and technical manual, not an easy mix, but one Henry has done very well.

For many wargamers, campaigns are quite possibly the pinnacle of the hobby. Bringing together planning, research, and preparation, along with a good dose of imagination, wargames campaigns provide the ultimate framework for our hobby. However, they can be daunting to create.

In this book, Henry has written the most comprehensive guide to this aspect of our hobby. He has built upon the words of Featherstone, Bath, Grant (both of them), and a whole host of other big names. Henry has then added more than a little of his own experience, wit, and creativity. It is hard to explain the sheer amount of knowledge that has been crammed into this book, which nevertheless remains accessible and easy to read.

This book will serve as a reference, a guide, an inspiration, or even just as a way to kindle (or renew) your interest in the hobby. However you choose to use it, it will keep you occupied for a long time to come.

What a stunning book! As a newcomer to wargaming and as yet not even thinking about wargaming whole campaigns rather than simple battles, I read this book wondering if it would be out of my current league. Nothing could be further from the truth as the author, who clearly is a foundation stone of the hobby, has delivered a fascinating and very readable book comprehensively covering all aspects which I wanted to know about and which will no doubt provoke thought in the more experienced wargamer. The chapters allow one to dip into subjects treating the book as a reference as well as an instruction on such aspects as Generalship, Doctrine, and the fine tuning of campaign rules to truly improve campaign wargaming. Also, assistance with more practical aspects such as map making and design, the impact of weather and inserting incremental skirmish battles into the campaign structure. Overall, a very thoughtful book and well worth the investment.

About Henry Hyde

Introduced to model soldiers, Airfix kits and a toy fort when he was a small boy, Henry Hyde has been playing wargames ever since, his interests ranging throughout the annals of history.
Henry burst onto the wargames scene in 2006 with his own Battlegames magazine. He went on to edit the merged Miniature Wargames with Battlegames before leaving to pursue other publishing, writing and design interests in 2016, including his Battlegames Patreon site for which he creates podcasts, videos and blog posts. He is the author of the acclaimed The Wargaming Compendium published by Pen & Sword in 2013, which achieved best-selling status on four of Amazon’s sites in both hardback and as an ebook.
An honours graduate in European History and languages from Sussex University, Henry’s interest in wargaming is firmly rooted in a passion for history. He has a special love of campaigns, classical ancient Greece and Persia, the battles and sieges of the eighteenth century and early WWII armour. He also dabbles in skirmish, naval and aerial wargaming and confesses to a lively interest in fantasy and science fiction.
As well as wargaming, Henry is extremely active online and is often found posting on social media. He enjoys writing fiction, photography, painting, music, cooking and a surprising amount of TV and films! He lives in the beautiful county of East Sussex on the south coast of England.
