Today, the Mustang is a living legend and is remembered as probably the finest long-range single-seat piston-engined fighter ever built.

Here, in words and images, the esteemed aviation historian Martin Bowman tells the story of an aircraft that continues to provoke enthusiastic praise.

We look at the Mustang's involvement in the Second World War and the Korean War, as well as other conflicts and engagements.

This new addition to the Images of War series serves as a tribute to an aircraft with a particularly impressive wartime record, the legacy of which is still felt today.

The images of crews and their aircraft remind us that the Mustang was more than an aeroplane to these individuals.

Well worth adding to a set of references or reading for the captions alone.

Scale Aircraft Modelling

A lot of the other pictures make the fine details needed for a top class scaie model much clearer - for example there's a great one of the wing guns being loaded which clearly shows the hatches and doors involved.
This book also includes a quite a few Korean war pictures which give yet another dimension to the range of illustrations and yet more options for the keen scale model builder.

Aeromodeller December 2022

"Lots of ideas for game piece schemes or builds and dioramas for gamers and modelers. Military enthusiasts get a huge variety of images from so many fronts and campaigns that this is a great resource to tie in with more prose sources for more of each story."

ARGunners.com

"Lots of diorama ideas and details in the photos."

Historical Miniatures Gaming Society, June 2022

"All of the images are well chosen and are provided as one image per page. A lot of information can also be gleaned from the photo captions."

ModellingMadness.com, April 2022

This book is another excellent study in photographs of what many consider to be the best fighter aircraft of WWII and beyond. The first 9 pages of the book are a concise history of the Aircraft from the beginning right up to the final retired Mustang in 1984 (by the Dominican Republic). Following on from this the remainder of the book covers the history in Black and White photographs with good descriptions for each.

The Flight Craft series is aimed at the modeller, and each one is generally split into three main sections – the first, covering the type’s design and development and then its operational service, supported with a good selection of (mainly contemporary) photographs. This is followed by an 8 page section of colour illustrations (in this particular book’s case, all profiles, three to a page), and finally a modelling section with details of various kit manufacturers products, in the main scales, with made-up examples of some of the kits.
The ‘Mustang’ starts with the Allison-engined sub-types, in service with the RAF and then the USAAF, before moving on to the Packard Merlin versions, in World War Two and then post-war, in USAF and ‘foreign’ service. The colour illustrations feature RAF and USAAF aircraft, with just one (RoKAF) post-war example. The modelling section is covered by a varied selection of reviews of 1/72, 1/48 and 1/32 scale kits, with photos of the finished models, all made to high standards.
The book is a useful reference, depending upon how much you already have on your bookshelves on this very popular type of course, but can be recommended to modellers coming into the hobby and/or those with limited reference on the types

Neil Robinson, IPMS No. 6 November & December 2021

The book is therefore presented as an excellent guide for the historian and for the model maker. If the operational part of the history of the aircraft is quite short (and it could not be otherwise given the great use and diffusion of the aircraft), that of the genesis of the aircraft is extremely interesting.
