Central to the German strategy of dealing with an Allied landing in France was the availability of a strong, mobile armoured reserve. In June 1944, as part of this force, the Army in the West was able to deploy over 300 Panther tanks, perhaps the best armoured fighting vehicle produced by Germany during the Second World War. British and American tank crews found to their horror that the Panthers could often survive numerous hits while a single round from one of their 75mm guns was enough to destroy any enemy tank. In his book, his third in the Tank Craft series, Dennis Oliver uses archive photographs and painstakingly researched, exquisitely presented colour illustrations to examine the part these powerful tanks played in the Normandy battles and also the battalions that operated them. As with previous titles in the Tank Craft series, a large part of this book showcases available model kits and aftermarket products and accessories, complemented by a gallery of skilfully constructed and painted models.

This is an excellent reference and well researched, and good value for money.

Dennis Oliver is a very impressive writer tackling subjects that are very deep and presenting that information to the modeller in a restricted number of pages. The information is also presented in a manner the modeller would find helpful regardless of where they come in the modelling scale; this means the information is presented in a style that is easy to read and understand and so makes the information appealing. The images and period photographs are well chosen and so represent a pleasing break point to take in the details.

Armorama, Darren Baker

Another really great book in the Tank Craft series. I have really come to rely on these books as hands-on reference material. As a model builder, I do a lot of research which is performed on the computer most of the time. It is nice to have the book at arm's length while double-checking information and checking for visual variations on the subject matter.

Modelers interested in accurately replicating historical vehicles want to know exactly what they looked like, and to that end this book is full of close-up historical photos, beautifully rendered color illustrations, and professional-grade samples of finished models. Wargamers will find authentic orders of battle and narratives of the actual situations these units faced in Normandy. Even if you aren’t a modeler or a wargamer, you will find much to appreciate in this visual vehicle history.

I already wrote about one book in this series, Sherman Tanks (Tankcraft #2), and now have read a few more, both in paper and in eBook versions. The more I leaf through them, the more enthusiastic I get. These are real gems for both scale modelers and those of us interested in the technical aspects of these tanks.

This is a book that has been designed to inform and enthuse the modeller.

IPMS Magazine

This is an excellent book covering German Panther tanks involved in the fighting after the Normandy Landing in 1944. It has a time line and some excellent photographs. However the colour plates are outstanding and aimed at detailed information on individual tanks that the author has identified. I had thought it would be another 'ho hum' book about German tanks, but it certainly was not, with some excellent research by the author that has to impress any reader. There is even detail of some of the tank commanders. I was quite taken with this book and recommend it not only to modellers, to whom it is firstly aimed, but also to historians who will enjoy reading the detailed research put into it.

For the modeller or the wargamer, this is a worthwhile addition to the bookshelf. Colour details are excellent and accurate as are the marking details. I am looking now for both my glue for the model sitting on my workbench as well as hunting around for the wargame vehicles for my late German Army. Highly recommended

Thomo's Hole - reviewed by Ian Thompson

An inexpensive book on a popular subject and other tanks already covered in this series include the Tiger, Jagdpanther and Sherman. Well worth a look if Panthers float your boat!

Very much a modellers book that tied in so well with the details of the tank and the context of the history surrounding it. Good value and well worth adding to your reference shelf.
