German Army on the Eastern Front – The Advance is a highly illustrated record of the extraordinary feat of arms that saw the Nazi armies drive deep into the vast terrain of the Soviet Union, to the gates of Stalingrad and Moscow. It traces the campaign from these hopeful beginnings until, on the brink of victory, the defenders and the winter contrived to slow and then halt the advance. It vividly conveys the appalling conditions endured by the invaders. By early 1943 the German advance finally petered out, leaving some 1.5 million dead from the battle of Stalingrad alone. The long and costly retreat was about to begin.

This title in Pen & Sword’s Images of War series presents a photographic record of Operation Barbarossa, the advance of the German armies deep into the Soviet Union, that reached as far as Stalingrad and Moscow itself. It traces the campaign from hopeful beginnings until stopped in its tracks in 1943 by determined Russian opposition and the arrival of winter. The conditions endured by the invaders, the defenders and civilians caught up in the conflict are well represented in this extensive selection of contemporary monochrome images.

Stuart Asquith, Author

This is a book of photographs, featuring some hitherto unseen images of the German Army on the Eastern Front in WWII. The rare pictures are taken from wartime archives and feature Operation Barbarossa and the invasion of the Soviet Union, and the battle for Stalingrad after which 1.5 million lay dead. The ensuing retreat by the German Army after that battle, fought in terrible conditions, showed the rest of the world that they were not invincible.

The pictures and accompanying text have been well researched by the author and in my view this is an ideal book for those interested in that theatre of war in WWII. The pictures alone tell the story.

The Armourer - Ken Rimell

This new addition to the Images of War series follows a popular format with an excellent selection of images being supported by introductory and caption text. Once again, the images are the main driver for the book, but this is deceptive. The text packs in a great deal of information and the book covers all of the aspects of this bitter conflict. This book covers the early stages of the war on the Eastern Front as the Germans made rapid advances into Russia and the Ukraine, taking large numbers of prisoners and destroying a vast amount of Russian equipment. The rare photographs will be of great interest to professionals and enthusiasts, but this is also a very good starting point for the novice and represents very good value for money... This book provides a strong impression of the happy months before the weaknesses led into an increasing string of defeats as the Allied forces began to advance on German homeland.

FIRE Project

A great addition to the canon.

Paul Diggett

Another excellent selection of archive photos, along with informative and well-written captions.

Military Modelling

The many fantastic pictures make the book a very useful title... Recommended to both the amateur and expert historian alike.

Grossdeutschland Aufklärungsgruppe

The research that has gone into this book is excellent, and a wonderful addition to the growing history of the Eastern Front that is oft forgotten in the West.
