Great Western Castle Class 4-6-0… Hardback Add to Basket £32.00

This third volume in the series on the Great Western Castle class locomotives focuses on the eight that have been preserved and goes into depth on the reconstruction of three of them, the two Tyseley ones, 5043 and 7029 described by Bob Meanley and Didcot’s 4079 recounted by David Maidment from the records of the Great Western Society, including the full story of 4079’s prolonged stay in Western Australia, its return to the UK and subsequent restoration. The history of all eight is covered and copiously illustrated, including over 100 colour photographs, with many during the restoration work by Bob Meanley and in operation by David Maidment. The book includes records of their operation and performance since restoration when some of the most remarkable performances of these locomotives were achieved.

"What lifts this far above the average is Bob Meanley’s account of the engineering challenges in maintaining engines and restoring them to service. Many of his photographs show engineering details not normally visible..."

The Society of Model and Experimental Engineers Journal - Volume 31 No. 6, December 2023

"Anyone who has the first two volumes will want this one to complete the story. It is recommended for anyone with an interest in Great Western steam."

The Journal of the Friends of the National Railway Museum - Autumn 2023, Issue 185

The latest (And last in the Trilogy) book in the Locomotive Portfolios series by David Maidment on the Castle Class Locomotive is jointly written with Bob Meanley and concentrates on the eight preserved members of the class. Each locomotive has its own story on how it came to survive the mass scraping of the class in the 1960s and chapter by chapter that story is told, firstly of their time in BR service up to the demise of Western Region steam in 1967.

On the whole the photographic coverage is excellent.

Steam World - August 2023

"Given that 2023 is the centenary of the ‘Castle’ class, this book is well timed, and it’s great to see a publication dedicated solely to the surviving examples."
